FULL TIME D-TOWN FARMER

The Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network (DBCFSN) seeks experienced, socially conscious, resilient urban farmers to join our team at the organization’s seven-acre D-Town© Farm. DBCFSN is a dynamic non-profit organization that works to build food sovereignty in Detroit’s Black community. Widely considered a leader in the field, DBCFSN works in food policy, urban agriculture, youth development, public education, and food co-op development.
SUMMARY
​
D-Town© Farmers are employees of DBCFSN and will be paid $15.00 per hour. We are
hiring a full-time position. Basic knowledge of urban agriculture is required. Farmers must have good communication skills and be able to work collectively and harmoniously. Farmers must support DBCFSN’s mission and Black community self-determination approach to food system change. Knowledge of African American history and culture is
helpful. These jobs require physical and mental stamina to meet various challenges.
Farmers report to the Farm Manager and are responsible for:

Actively participating in weekly farm operations meetings.

Under the leadership of the Farm Manager, performing a variety of tasks necessary
for the progress, maintenance, and growth of the farm, including but not limited to:-
Hoop house and field crop production, including planting, cultivating, and
-
irrigating crops.

Harvesting, washing, packing, and selling crops.
-
Implementing disease, insect, and animal control measures.
-
Maintaining farm landscaping and aesthetics.
-
Maintaining the integrity of raised beds and hoop houses.

Conducting research on the best techniques to troubleshoot production
challenges or exploring new methods of agricultural production

EXPERIENCE
A year or more of experience in small-scale sustainable farming is required.
